| These notes are hand-signed by General Gordon just before his violent death as the Mahdi's men put the town of Khartoum to the sword - and spear It is said that the last words he herd were: "Your time is come o' evil one" as a spear was thrust through him. It was death to be found in possession of these notes but when it was learned that the Egyptian authorities were honouring the notes many were smuggled out by the camel postman. |

| Because the hand-signing of notes took so much time a printed signature was used on some of the notes. They are scarcer than the hand-signed notes be-cause the local traders often refused to take them as they did not bear the hand-mark of the great Gordon. After a while Gordon had to go back to hand-signing. He would sit in the Palace lit by lamps signing way into the night. When locals complained that the Mahdi's men could use the lights to take pot-shots at them, he told the complainants: "'When God was giving out fear he ran out of it as he came to Gordon. I have no fear". He ordered the lights to be made brighter. |
