| Major General Steffens, hero of the Norwegian armed forces, held the German army up while the King of Norway escaped in a British destroyer to form a goverment in exile. General Steffens was finally surrounded but continued fighting for some time. A stickler for doing things correctly he took the trouble to telephone the head bank in Bergen to ask far perms-sion to issue his own emergency paper money. Surprised officials in Bergen formally panted permission. His notes were issued at Voss on 14th April 1940. |
